Churches of Scientology Disaster Response Participates in the 2009 Annual National VOAD Conference
Salt Lake City—The Churches of Scientology Disaster Response (CSDR) was proud to participate with the national member organizations of the National VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters) attending the 17th annual conference last week in Salt Lake City, Utah. The theme of the conference was “Life Elevated…A Celebration of Service.”
National VOAD is the forum where organizations share knowledge and resources throughout the disaster cycle-preparation, response and recovery – to help disaster survivors and their communities.
Members of National VOAD form a coalition of nonprofit organizations that respond to disasters as part of their overall mission, promoting the cooperation, communication, coordination and collaboration needed in disaster response not only among themselves but with local, state and federal agencies as well.
“Service to those in need is paramount,” said Susan Taylor, National Director of the Churches of Scientology Disaster Response. “We do our best in times of disaster to provide whatever help is needed whether it is distributing food, water, or supplies; providing direct services to individuals in need; helping to clean up after floods; or providing spiritual care to responders, survivors or care-givers-helping them to overcome stress, shock, loss or trauma.”
Scientology Volunteer Ministers specialize in providing “Scientology Assists” — simple light, non-intrusive emotional and spiritual stress relief techniques developed by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard. These assists help, among many things, to restore order and calm in an area, address and alleviate the emotional and spiritual effects of physical pain, shock and trauma, relieve stress, help orient a confused or distraught individual and help survivors, responders and care-givers to cope with the immediate situation more rapidly and effectively.
CSDR volunteers reach out to those in need in the field or from their field base. Their large yellow tents are often used as PODs (points of distribution) where water, food and supplies are given to those in need. CSDR activities have ranged from helping at recent fires in California, to assisting during floods in Washington State, tornados in the mid-west, and hurricanes in Florida and the Southeast.
This last week CSDR participated with other organizations at the National VOAD conference’s Exhibit Hall by having a booth where Scientology Assists demonstrations were given. During the final evening’s celebration at the Salt Palace, the CSDR yellow tent was on display alongside the Red Cross and Salvation Army trucks and other agencies’ emergency vehicles. CSDR volunteers offered Assists to the attendees, demonstrating their effectiveness.
Ms. Taylor noted that it is a privilege to work with so many other organizations to help those in need. “The collaborative efforts of all of us make it possible to bring real help and relief after a disaster,” she said.
In establishing the Scientology Volunteer Ministers program more than 30 years ago, L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of the Scientology religion, wrote: “A Volunteer Minister does not shut his eyes to the pain, evil and injustice of existence. Rather, he is trained to handle these things and help others achieve relief from them and new personal strength as well.”

President Bush visits the Katrina survivors
President George Bush finally visited the ruins of the hurricane at the American Red Cross national. He extended to the victims some relief operations that will help the operation to organize the disaster. The relief came from the Disaster Operations Center in Washington.
It’s good that the President thought pf visiting the place so that he can see and feel the shortcomings his countrymen have gone through. He declared to the people that there are a lot of people and neighboring countries that are willing to help. He also said that he came to help the people.
He said that it is now necessary to gather and collect donations such as money, blood, time and care. The survivors really need relief right now. Their homes have been taken away leaving them empty handed. In a county suffering from disaster, it is not appropriate to leave them hungry. Health and safety should come first in treating this situation. Although the people are hopeless, at least these reliefs will ease their pain and keep them struggling to survive.
But volunteers and kind hearts is all that they need. The country is at low and especially the victims of the hurricane. Much has been taken away from them so an extra hand is all they need to keep up with the hardships they are facing now. Hopes have been high that soon the country will recuperate from this tragic experience although they fear that it is quite impossible to achieve.
He visited the victims again bringing relief and other helpful options to the families. He stated that even if the relief did not come too soon as expected, at least more services and relief operation has been offered today. More food has been brought and delivered. The people need more food each day. There are a number of people in evacuation sites so constant relief is needed to keep them alive and in good health.
He then asks for blood donors for the victims who are under a serious state and condition. If more concerned citizens will reach out, the more chances there will be of saving people’s lives. Many victims had been badly hurt and they need immediate medication and treatment. This situation should be given more care and attention so as not to let them suffer more.

USMMA of Bellingham to Host Community Blood Drive on June 4th
Anyone who donates blood at USMMA on June 4th will receive a free box of Chocolate Dipped Strawberries from Edible Arrangements and will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win two Boston Red Sox Tickets and to be honored on the field as “Blood Donor of the Game”.
The American Red Cross’ specially trained staff will be set up on-site at USMMA to collect blood donations from volunteers. To be eligible to give blood, healthy donors must meet the following criteria:
Must be at least 17 years of age
Must weigh at least 110 lbs.
Must not have donated whole blood within the last eight weeks.
An American Red Cross staff member will conduct an extensive health history on each blood donor volunteer. Donor eligibility rules are intended to protect the health and safety of the donor as well as the patient who will receive the transfusion. The final determination of eligibility is made by American Red Cross staff.
According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, yet only five percent of the eligible population gives blood.
“There is a significant and ongoing need for blood. There are many people who require transfusions – from those in emergency situations to those with cancer, blood disorders or other illnesses. It’s important to come together as a community to help fulfill that need. We encourage our staff and members as well as those in the community to consider giving blood at USMMA on June 4th,” noted Tom Hafers, owner of USMMA.
